My Tendon

Shoulder — Rotator Cuff

My Cuff

The rotator cuff is a set of four muscle tendons that connect your upper arm bone to your chest, letting you move and rotate your arm.

What can go wrong

A tear occurs when one or more tendons separate from the humerus. Partial tears leave some connection intact; complete tears involve full separation. These injuries typically cause significant pain and movement difficulty, and result from overhead motion, heavy lifting, or trauma — affecting people across all activity levels, not just athletes.

Prevention

  • Daily light shoulder exercises
  • Maintain good posture
  • Avoid side sleeping on the affected shoulder
  • Limit overhead movements
  • Stretch before workouts
  • Hot/cold compress therapy when sore
  • Give your shoulders regular rest

Most affected individuals are over 60 years old. The rotator cuff can be difficult to heal — always talk with your doctor first.
